I had my own Lazy Sunday today (if you haven't seen it yet, you gotta see the virally distributed SNL clip video). I was casually surfing around, and found a remarkable 48 minute clip of serial entrepreneur and marketing guru Seth Godin on Google Video speaking at a Google staff meeting. This thing is going viral itself pretty quick I think.
I normally don't have the time or bandwidth for online video but I was really taken in by Seth's message: be "remarkable". Which in short means create products that other people remark to others about so you create viral word of mouth. Induce your customers to sell your products to their friends, and then they sell to their friends, etc. The old brute force methods are expensive and not as effective, even for older firms that can afford them.
I know that sounds simple, but there is a lot more to it than that; I don't want to steal Seth's thunder. Be warned that Seth subtlety plugs his new book: "All Marketers are Liars: The Power of Telling Authentic Stories in a Low Trust World". But frankly, I really didn't mind, which is the point he was trying to make in his presentation. I would still encourage you to watch the clip or read the book sometime if you want to figure out why your marketing plans don't seem to be bearing fruit.
If you have any "remarkable" success stories I'd love to hear about them especially as applied to business to business product/service sales vs consumer sales efforts, so do comment below.
